How to Add a Microsoft Account in Windows 11 (Easy Step-by-Step Guide)

Your system will come from pre-setup with a local account to allow you to immediately begin using your computer. If you would like to add a Microsoft account, follow the steps below. Please note adding a Microsoft account will replace the local account. This should not affect your files or settings, but swapping is at the user’s own risk.

Type “account” in the start menu and select “Your account info”

Select the option that says “Sign in with a Microsoft Account instead”

Login with your Microsoft Account (or create one), this will convert your local account into a Microsoft account.

Now you have added a Microsoft account you may need to enter the password to the account you have used to login to your device going forward.

To change this go to sign in options on the accounts page to customise your user experience such as adding a pass code for quicker login or use other security options such as Windows Hello, fingerprint recognition or a security key to name a few.

If your computer has multiple user accounts, it’s recommended at this point to make sure that any other user’s accounts are still able to login to their accounts normally.
